Jacqueline tends to be a bit shy if there’s too much attention on her and she had always hinted to me that she would not want me to propose in a place where she wouldn’t be comfortable. What better place than in our own garden. That day we had had breakfast in the garden before going out to Lance and Francis for a braai, or so she thought would be the plan. I had hidden a board saying “Jacqueline, will you marry me?” in the sand of her flowerbed. I also found a horrible weed that I knew she would rip out to expose a portion of the board and discover the message. But as Murphy would have it, she had just had her nails done and so she wasn’t about to just pick out a life-changing weed. So, after a number of hints at her pretty flowerbed and then the weed, I had to help her. The rest, I suppose is history.
